Important Things to Know About Using BigAtom Overlays in Meta Catalogs

Updated over a month ago

Overlays created via BigAtom transform your base product images by applying a design or template. These overlay images are pushed to Meta as additional images, while the original image continues to remain as the primary (base) image.

As a result, when multiple overlays are applied to the same product, the Meta catalog will contain multiple images for that product—each representing a different overlay variation generated by BigAtom.

This setup allows Meta to always have access to overlay-enabled images for all applicable products. Because of this, Meta may automatically display these overlay images in certain placements, such as Stories or Reels, even if the overlay is not explicitly assigned to the ad.

To prevent overlay images from appearing in ads where they are not intended, make sure the following settings are disabled at the ad level across all catalog ads in the account:

  • Turn off all Media Enhancements at the ad level

  • Under Display Format Options, turn off “Show as Collection”

By disabling these options, Meta will only use the base product image for ads where overlays are not assigned, ensuring overlay images appear only in the intended placements and campaigns.
