Why is an Overlay Appearing on Ads Where It’s Not Applied?

If you notice an overlay appearing on ads where it wasn’t assigned, the most common reason is Meta’s media enhancement settings being enabled at the ad level.

Understanding Why This Happens

When Media Enhancements such as:

  • Dynamic Media

  • Generate AI Image

  • Standard Media Improvements
are turned ON, Meta is allowed to automatically pick any image from your catalog if it predicts better performance.

BigAtom sends overlay-added images as additional images inside the product catalog. These images remain available as alternate assets. With Meta’s media enhancements active, Meta may:

  • Select these additional catalog images

  • Replace your primary image automatically

  • Display an overlay even when you didn’t assign it

This leads to overlays appearing on ads where they were not intended.

How to Fix This

To prevent unassigned overlays from showing on your ads:

✔ Turn OFF all Media Enhancements at the ad level for catalog-linked campaigns.

This ensures Meta only uses the primary image you selected and does not automatically substitute alternate catalog images.
